Struggles of Being a Content Creator

Hello lovelies and Happy New month!

It's great to be back after a busy week. I won't lie, my days are getting busier, but I'm taking one step at a time.

One of the things I did this past week was attend a Christian Creative Summit hosted by PENSA Warwick. For those of you who are unaware, PENSA (Pentecost Students and Associates) is an international Christian student association for universities. We aim to raise world changers with the Christ factor! If your university has a PENSA please do join; it's such an amazing society (please allow this shameless plug).

So as I was saying, I attended an online Christian Creative Summit where a lot of Christian creators came by to share their craft, their journey and advice on being a creative. There were singers, entrepreneurs, poets, youtubers and so much more. One of the things I learnt from the Summit was that, although being a content creator helps us to share our God-given gifts with the world, there are a lot of challenges that come with it.

In this post, I'll be identifying some of these challenges and giving tips on how to overcome them.

1. Fear of what others will say or think

In a world so used to the concept of validation, it's understandable to be afraid of putting yourself out there for fear of what other people will say or think of you. Maybe you're just not good enough. Maybe sharing your story will only invite mockery and backlash. Maybe you won't even get a lot of views or engagement.

It's hard not to care what other people think. It's a skill that we have to try to improve upon everyday. But I think it starts with appreciating who you are and the gift God has given you. Once you remember why you're doing what you're doing, it'll be easier to ignore all the thoughts causing you to fear, and be bold enough to share your creation with the world.

2. Perfectionism

You've spent hours recording multiple takes of a video when finally you get the perfect one. But as you gather the courage to post it, you realise something still sounds off. You end up not sharing the video because it's just not right yet, and you end up wasting all that time before.

This happens not once, but so frequently that you end up not posting any videos for weeks. All because you want things to be perfect.

NEWSFLASH:

Absolute perfection doesn't exist. It's not possible. Even the most perfect thing will be seen as flawed to others.

So just share your content. Waiting for things to be absolutely perfect won't help at all. It's through the mistakes you make that you're able to be better. Don't deprive the world of your talents all because you're waiting to hone and perfect your skill. You never even know how sharing your journey might encourage someone else.

3. Personal Struggles

Honestly, sometimes the things going on in our lives try to stop us from being great. Especially when it comes to mental health issues. Bad mental health a lot of the time causes us to put a hold on sharing our creations with others. Anxiety, low self-esteem, depression. These can even block our creativity. Then there's all the other problems and aspects of our life such as family, school and relationships. And even just personal issues.

Sometimes, the solution is that we need to take a step back and focus on ourselves. It can be a bit overwhelming trying to juggle being a creator and everything else going on in our lives, especially when we're dealing with life crises, relationship issues and personal problems. So take a break everyone once in a while until you're better and ready to come back to sharing your content.

4. Poor traits

Consistency is one of the key attributes of being a creator and it's easy to let traits like procrastination and laziness get in the way of sharing your content. I for one can raise my hand and say that I definitely struggle with being consistent in my creative content because of these two things- whether it's in blogging, making music videos, Tiktoks. As one of the guest speakers for the event said, it's not that you don't have time, you just don't have time management.

Stop putting things off until later when you can do it now. Make a plan, schedule your activities and keep to those schedules as much as you can.

5. Not Knowing Your Purpose

An important question I think you need to ask yourself is, why are you doing what you're doing? Why do you share your creations with the world? Is it to motivate others? Is it to share your knowledge? Is it just for fun? Is it to boost your followers?

Knowing the reason why you do what you do will determine how much effort you put into it. You can share content for fun but at a point you might feel discouraged or unmotivated to go on. Which will be a shame because you'll end up depriving the world of your God-given gifts and skills. But if you do it with a goal in mind, such as encouraging or sharing your expertise with others, it'll push you to give your best and to stay consistent, because you know that what you're doing is important and has an impact.

So think about why you want to be a creator and why you're sharing your crafts to the world.

I hope these tips and advice helped. Remember that at the end of the day, we all have gifts inside of us that we need to share. And being a creator isn't limited only to a specific group of people. EVERYONE can be creative, even if you haven't identified your area yet. Whether it's sharing your intellectual knowledge or being a skilled painter, as long as you can bless others, go right ahead and do it!

Hope you enjoyed this post. Are there any other things that stop you from letting your creativity flow? Feel free to share in the comments below or email/message me on social media (links below).
