That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
Luke 7:7
The chapter begins with the story of a centurion, an important officer in the army. He sends some Jewish elders to make a request to Jesus, to save his dying servant. He believed that he wasn't worthy to be in the presence of Jesus who was too great, so he asked him to only say the word for his servant to be healed. And this great faith was not only commended by Jesus, but caused his servant to be healed.
From this story, we not only see the great faith of the centurion, but how kind and humble he was. He cared so much for his servant that when an opportunity rose for him to receive healing, the centurion jumped at the chance. Despite the difference in their social backgrounds and ranks of importance, the centurion cared for those who were considered less important than he was.
Also, the Jewish elders, when presenting the centurion's request to Jesus, added that the centurion deserved to have his request granted because of his good works. But he himself acknowledged that he was not worthy to be in Jesus' midst. He wasn't haughty or arrogant just because of his position. He recognised Jesus' importance and showed humility in his actions and words.
It is important that we always stay humble, no matter how important others see us or how great we may become. God is the one who establishes you in your high position and he can easily bring you down. He humbles those who exalt themselves.
Remember to be kind to everyone in every stage you find yourself in. In the poor times and times of plenty, be kind to both those who are better off and worse off than you are.
Stay blessed and stay a blessing.
