Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Luke 5:31-32
To the Pharisees and teachers of the law, it seemed an abomination that Jesus, the man who was claimed to be the Son of God, would be in the midst of people they saw as sinners and unrighteous. To them, they probably thought that the Son of God was holy and so had no reason to be among unholy people.
The story kind of gives you an idea of how highly the Pharisees and teachers of the law thought of themselves; thinking that they alone were righteous and looking down on everyone else because of their position.
But that mindset was far from right. The whole point of the Messiah coming to earth, was to save the people from their sins. How then do you expect to save someone if you don't associate with them?
Jesus' main goal was not to come for those who claimed to be righteous, but for those who knew they were not and needed to be saved from their sinful lives. The Pharisees and teachers of the law saw themselves as righteous, but they were only righteous by acts (and even this wasn't 100% true of them).
Never think that you're beyond salvation. Jesus came to die for sinners like you and me, and there is no sin so great that could ever make you ineligible of God's gift of salvation and eternal life.
On the other hand, don't think that you can gain salvation through good deeds and acts. Jesus said that in order to be truly saved, you must believe and confess that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to die for your sins. You must surrender your life to Him and be born again.
And that is the only way to receive salvation. There is no other way.
Stay blessed and stay a blessing.
