Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.
Proverbs 17:14
It is very easy and tempting to get into an argument with someone, especially when you think you're right.
But today's verse is warning us against starting quarrels. It compares it to breaching a dam. A dam is able to store huge amounts of water, but one little hole or crack can cause the dam to 'self-destruct', and all its contents are let loose. This leads to a number of disasters including floods and destruction of land.
A wise person once said that maturity is knowing when to keep quiet. You don't need to jump at every little remark that is said to you. Silence, they say, is golden. And in some situations, silence is what is needed.
Ask God for patience and the strength to be able to keep quiet when you sense a dispute arising. Even when you know you're not in the wrong, drop the topic before it gets tense.
Stay blessed and stay a blessing.
