The Bible is basically our instructional manual for life.
The answers to a lot, if not all, of the problems we face can be found in God's Word. And this includes trying to break bad habits. Many times, the Bible tells us how we can overcome challenges but it takes a little help to not only hear and understand these guidelines but to live by them.
That's where the Holy Spirit comes in.
The Holy Spirit, the third person (yes person, not thing) in the Divine Trinity, is our Helper as promised by Jesus when He was about to leave the Earth. And that's what He does; He helps us to walk in righteousness and to live a life of holiness. Where we fail to be consistent in doing good or keeping with our desire to do right and shun our bad habits, the Holy Spirit gives us the strength to do what our mind wants but what our body finds difficult to do.
Continuing from the last post, I thought it would be good to share a few verses that remind us what to do when trying to quit our bad habits.
1.
With the Holy Spirit, we have the power to overcome bad habits and are able to discipline ourselves to say NO.
2.
Falling back into old habits can happen, but when we acknowledge that we can't do it on our own and submit our will to God, we are able to resist any temptation to go back to our old ways.
3.
As children of God, our bodies aren't our own, we were bought by the precious blood of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This doesn't mean we're slaves to God as we were slaves to sin, but we are rather free from sin in this new life we've found in God. We must therefore remember when we're tempted to slip back into old habits that our bodies are God's temple and we must therefore keep His temple clean and holy.
4.
It's about time to throw off every bad habit that is keeping you from moving forward! You have greater things in store for you but you can't do that by letting certain things weigh you down. Throw them off and strive towards who God has called you to be!
5.
You may think that it's true that we have the right to do anything with our bodies and lives, but it doesn't mean that those things are beneficial. That bad habit may not be hurting others, but it doesn't make it right. Don't let certain actions and things in your life control you.
6.
This scripture consists of two parts. One: let everything you do with your body glorify God, because it is with our bodies (God's temple) that we praise and worship Him.
Two: Adopt a heavenly, spiritual mindset, one that steers you from the path of sin, bad habits and addictions, and into God's will for your life.
7.
Even the Bible talks about having accountability partners; people who will help make sure you don't fall and that even when you do, they can help you get back up. Two is better than one.
8.
As a brand new person in Christ Jesus, don't allow the things from your previous way of life to creep into your new life. You are a whole new you with a better mindset and freedom from past habits and addictions.
9.
It's good to remind ourselves that Jesus Christ lives within our hearts and we also have the Holy Spirit in us. Therefore God's presence is clearly always with us, wanting us to do good and keep ourselves from sin. Try to remember that the next time you want to fall back into old habits. Also, don't put yourself in a position where you know you'll be tempted to do wrong. Prevention is better than cure.
10.
Prayer is key in wanting to curb bad habits. Our minds might be saying No but our bodies just can't help but say Yes. Prayer strengthens us in overcoming temptations, so never leave it as the last option. Pray without ceasing.
Hope these verses help. Feel free to share any verses you'd like to add in the comments section below or email/message me on social media. Stay safe lovelies and have a great day.
